ATEX Approved Solutions

What are ATEX Devices?

ATEX mobile devices are specialized smartphones, tablets, and other mobile technologies designed for use in hazardous environments where there is a risk of explosions due to flammable gases, vapours, mists, or dust. These devices are built to meet the stringent safety standards outlined by the ATEX Directive (2014/34/EU), ensuring they can safely operate in explosive atmospheres without igniting the surrounding environment.

ATEX covers equipment that satisfies three criteria:

  • It must be purposely designed for use within an explosive atmosphere at normal temperatures and pressures.
  • The atmosphere may contain gas, vapour, mist or dust as a fuel, but it must be based on air as the oxidiser.
  • The equipment must have an ignition source in and of itself, such as a spark, hot surface, etc...

Zone classification explained

Ex zones begin at 0 for gases and 20 for dust, while equipment classifications start at 1. The terms ‘ATEX zones’ and ‘ATEX equipment categories’ each have distinct origins and numbering systems, which we will explore further later in this article.

The frequency with which an explosive atmosphere appears during normal operations dictates the classification of ATEX zones for combustible dust and flammable gases:

Zone 0 or 20 is for environments where an explosive atmosphere is constantly present, such as inside a tank.

Zone 1 or 21 applies if an explosive atmosphere is present only intermittently.

For environments where an explosive atmosphere is a rare occurrence during normal operations, such as the area surrounding Zone 1/21 where flammable substances might occasionally spill over, the classification would be Zone 2 or 22.
